A healthy smile doesn’t happen by accident — it’s built one visit at a time. The twice-yearly checkup catches the small things before they become expensive ones: the cavity that’s a $120 filling today, the early gum inflammation that reverses with a cleaning. At Royale Dental in Hialeah, hygiene visits combine careful diagnostics, gentle technique, and bilingual education so you leave knowing exactly what’s going on in your mouth and what to do at home between visits. Most insurance covers preventive care at 100% — no reason to skip.

What a routine visit includes

A complete preventive visit is more than a quick polish. In a 45–60 minute appointment, we work through:

  • Comprehensive exam — every tooth, every existing restoration, the gums, the bite, the jaw joints, and an oral cancer screening of the lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat
  • Digital x-rays — bitewings annually, a full mouth series or panoramic image every 3–5 years, all at low radiation doses
  • Periodontal measurements — we record pocket depths around each tooth to spot early gum disease before symptoms appear
  • Professional cleaning (prophylaxis) — ultrasonic and hand instruments remove plaque and tartar above the gumline and slightly below in healthy tissue; deeper subgingival deposits from active gum disease require a separate scaling and root planing appointment
  • Polish and topical fluoride — smooth surfaces resist new plaque, and fluoride remineralizes weak enamel
  • Home care coaching — specific brushing technique, floss or interdental brush selection, and product recommendations tailored to what we found that day

Who routine hygiene visits are for

Every adult and child benefits from regular checkups, but the schedule should match your risk profile. Twice-yearly visits work for most healthy adults. Patients with active or treated gum disease, heavy tartar build-up, dry mouth from medication, diabetes, or a history of frequent cavities often do better on a 3–4 month recall. Children, pregnant patients, and anyone with braces or aligners also benefit from more frequent supervision.

Why six months matters

Plaque — the soft bacterial film that forms on teeth — matures into a sticky biofilm within 24–48 hours. Left undisturbed, it begins mineralizing into tartar (calculus) over days to weeks. Once hardened, brushing and flossing can no longer remove it; only professional instruments can. Six months is the interval at which tartar accumulation, early decay between teeth, and the first signs of gum inflammation can still be reversed cheaply and comfortably. Wait longer and a routine cleaning may turn into a filling, a crown, or scaling and root planing — all of which cost more, take longer, and are less comfortable than the visit you skipped.

According to NIDCR, 42% of U.S. adults aged 30 and over have periodontitis (NHANES 2009–2014). Most of those cases are preventable with consistent home care and regular professional cleanings. We dig deeper into the systemic side of this in Oral Exams and Systemic Health and the gum health–heart health connection, and into the day-to-day side in Nutrition for Stronger Teeth.

What to expect at your first visit

If it’s been a while — or if it’s your first visit with us — we plan a longer appointment so nothing gets rushed:

  1. Health history review. Medications, conditions, allergies, and any concerns you want addressed.
  2. Full diagnostic workup. X-rays, periodontal charting, intraoral photos, and oral cancer screening.
  3. Hygiene visit. A thorough cleaning sized to what we find — sometimes a single appointment, sometimes split into two if there’s significant tartar build-up.
  4. Findings review. We sit down with you and walk through the photos and x-rays in plain language. If treatment is needed, you leave with a written estimate and a plan, never a surprise bill.

It’s been a while? No judgment. We see patients who haven’t been in 2, 5, or even 10 years. The first visit is about getting a clear picture — not a lecture. Most patients who’ve been away only need a thorough cleaning to get back on track.

Benefits of staying on schedule

  • Catch cavities when they’re small and inexpensive to fill
  • Stop gum disease while it’s still reversible
  • Detect oral cancer early, when survival rates are highest
  • Keep existing crowns, bridges, and implants in good shape longer
  • Lower lifetime dental costs — prevention is far cheaper than restoration
  • Build a baseline so we notice subtle changes year over year

How much does a dental cleaning cost in Hialeah?

For self-pay patients, the pricing is straightforward: $65 for a dental exam with X-rays and $90 for a standard cleaning. Deeper cleanings for patients with gum disease are priced separately — see periodontal therapy for the scaling and root planing schedule.

Most dental plans cover two exams and two cleanings per year at 100% as preventive care, plus one set of bitewing x-rays. We bill insurance directly, so routine hygiene typically costs you nothing out of pocket. Bring your card to the first visit and we’ll verify benefits in about 60 seconds.

Patients come to our Hialeah office for cleanings and exams from Doral, Miami Lakes, Coral Gables, and Westchester. Bilingual hygienists serve our Hialeah and greater Miami-Dade community in English and Spanish, so you and your family can ask questions and get clear answers in whichever language feels most natural. Common questions

Frequently asked about Teeth Cleaning & Dental Exams

  • How often should I come in for a cleaning?
Every six months for most adults. The American Dental Association recommends regular visits at intervals determined by your dentist based on individual risk. If you have a history of gum disease, are recovering from periodontal treatment, or smoke, we may recommend a 3–4 month schedule to keep deeper pockets stable and catch recurrence early.
  • What x-rays do I need and how often?
Bitewing x-rays once a year detect cavities between teeth where a visual exam can't reach. A full mouth series or panoramic x-ray every 3–5 years gives a complete view of bone health, wisdom teeth, and structural concerns. We use low-dose digital x-rays exclusively, which deliver a fraction of the radiation of older film systems.
  • Does the cleaning hurt?
A routine prophylaxis is comfortable for most patients. If your gums are inflamed or there's tartar below the gumline, mild sensitivity is normal — we use gentle ultrasonic instruments and topical numbing gel as needed. Tell us at the start if you're a sensitive cleaner and we'll slow down, adjust the ultrasonic power, and pause whenever you need a break.
  • I haven't been to the dentist in years — what should I expect?
No judgment, just a fresh start. We schedule a longer first visit to get a complete picture — full exam, x-rays, periodontal measurements, and an oral cancer screening. If we find anything that needs treatment, we explain it in plain language with a written estimate before any work is scheduled. Many patients in this situation only need a thorough cleaning to get back on track.
  • Are dental cleanings safe during pregnancy?
Yes — and they're actively recommended. Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase the risk of pregnancy gingivitis and gum inflammation. Routine cleanings and exams are safe in any trimester; we'll modify positioning for comfort in the third trimester. Let us know you're pregnant so we can defer non-urgent x-rays and adjust care accordingly.
  • What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular prophylaxis (routine cleaning) is for patients with healthy gums or mild gingivitis — it removes plaque and tartar above the gumline and slightly below in healthy tissue, typically in one visit. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is for patients with periodontal disease — it removes tartar from deeper pockets (4mm or more) and smooths the root surfaces to help gum tissue reattach. Deep cleanings are usually done one quadrant at a time with local anesthetic. We measure pocket depths at every visit so we can tell you exactly which type your gums need.
  • Do I need x-rays at every visit?
Not necessarily. We take bitewing x-rays once a year to detect cavities between teeth that a visual exam can't reach. A full mouth series or panoramic x-ray is taken every 3–5 years to assess bone levels, wisdom teeth, and root structures. If you're a new patient without recent records, we'll take a baseline set on the first visit. We use low-dose digital x-rays — the radiation exposure is very small, comparable to a short plane flight.
  • How do I know if I need a deep cleaning?
The main indicators are pocket depths of 4mm or more around teeth, bleeding that persists after regular brushing and flossing, visible tartar below the gumline on x-rays, or gum recession with exposed root surfaces. We measure every tooth at every visit — if pockets have deepened since your last appointment or you haven't been in long enough for us to have a baseline, we'll explain the findings and recommend the appropriate treatment. See our periodontal therapy page for what a deep cleaning involves.
